What We Need To See In The Mario Bros. Movie

Up until very recently, Nintendo has been guarded with its wide net of beloved video game franchises. After the total critical failing of the Super Mario Bros. movie in 1993, the video game maker has been understandably cautious about sending Legend of Zelda, Metroid, or Donkey Kong to Hollywood, and has kept to what it knows: making awesome video games. Apparently, at some point down the line, Nintendo realized it could make a zillion dollars by cashing in their characters in new media. Not only is a Nintendo theme park coming, but Detective Pikachu and Super Mario Bros. are getting movies. It's the latter that has us especially excited... and a little concerned.

Nintendo's most iconic franchise will be turned into an animated movie by Illumination (Despicable Me, Secret Life of Pets) with Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto producing. Detective Pikachu is a fairly low stakes situation, but Super Mario Bros. getting a movie is a big deal. It's a pretty big sign of trust from Nintendo and could very well start a new saga of video-game movies. Trouble is that video games movies are typically terrible but there are steps that Illumination and Nintendo can take to make it so they learn from the mistakes of Mario's first movie. Here's what we want to see in the Super Mario movie.

Keep Illumination In CheckIllumination has obviously found a lot of success, having made some very popular animated movies that have gone on to make a ton at the box office. However, these movies are more often than not just kind of okay, quality-wise. They are making movies targeted primarily at kids, which is totally fine, but to Illumination, that means putting lots of farts jokes, butt cracks, and other low hanging fruit. Super Mario isn't anything like that and is charming as hell, filled with well-designed creatures and incredibly imaginative worlds. I don't want to see Toads become the new Minions. Illumination is pretty good at emotion, though, so Nintendo just needs to reign in the studio's worse impulses.

Don't Make It One Big ReferenceThe appeal of a Mario movie doesn't really need to be explained, given the importance Hollywood places on recognizable IPs and nostalgia. Movies and TV shows with an emphasis on nostalgia (like, say, Stranger Things) run the risk of not being anything more than the sum of its references. With dozens of games and characters, the Super Mario movie shouldn't get too hung up on callbacks. These callbacks are nice for fans, but all good things come in moderation. If the movie was one reference after the next, it wouldn't be fulfilling. There also needs to be a worthwhile story to get us entertained, and it wouldn't hurt to break some new ground.

Keep Mario Silent (Mostly)One of the hardest things about adapting Nintendo characters is that a huge chunk of them never say anything outside of a few key catchphrases. Mario never speaks in full sentences and only communicates through "Wa-ha!" and the occasional "Let's-a go!" The animated movie shouldn't change this. Mario has been around for decades and giving him a full voice and personality is, frankly, too weird. It's really difficult to imagine him as anything but the cheery plumber who silently saves the day, and trying to add depth to him runs the risk of shattering his image. However, just about every other character does speak, so a movie could rely on those characters to supply dialogue that Mario cannot.

Also, Charles Martinet has done the voice for Mario, Luigi, and tons of other characters for years, and it would be really cool if they had him do the movie voices, as well. Not every animated movie has to have an A-list celebrity voice cast!

Branch Away From The GamesI literally can't count the number of Mario games Nintendo has made, so there's no shortage of source material for Illumination to take inspiration from. But just because all that material is there, doesn't mean it all has to be used. No one Mario video game is THE Mario video game. The majority of them are essentially the same story-wise, but Illumination shouldn't just do an adaptation of, say, Super Mario 64 or Super Mario World. Take what's needed from whichever games, but don't be afraid to branch away from them. If people want to see Super Mario Odyssey, they just can play it. Let's see something fresh, which leads me to my next point...

Create An Original StoryEven people who have never played a Mario game probably know the basic premise: Princess Peach is kidnapped by Bowser and it's up to Mario (and Luigi, sometimes) to save her. That's the basis for the bulk of the Mario franchise and everything else is just meant to be a fun experience for the player. This leaves Illumination a lot of room to play around and come up with something new to add to the kidnap plot. A Mario movie actually needs a plot, character development, and stakes, while a video game just has to provide fun levels to play through. Mario stories are deliberately light because they aren't the main attraction. A movie needs to step it up in certain categories, and maybe the best way to do that is to take the basic elements and make something new with them. Hell, maybe Peach doesn't even get kidnapped!

Have Fun With It!Mario games haven't been around for so many years for no reason. Not only is the polished platforming super fun to play, but the world is so damn charming. Mario games are silly and a movie should embrace that feeling. Animation means that the sky is the limit and there are no restrictions in showing off all the wonders of a typical Mario game. I want to see a kingdom based entirely on cooking or an evil turtle man use a bell to turn into an evil cat-turtle man. These games are ridiculous and there's so much opportunity with that. Honestly, as long as the movie is fun and imaginative, that's three-fourths of the battle right there.

Zachary Levi Is Literally Glowing In New Shazam! Image

The DCEU is going to delve into some lighthearted territory next year when David F. Sandberg's Shazam! hits the big screen, and many audiences are very excited to see what the silver screen version of Billy Batson can bring to the table. It has been decades since the character last appeared in live-action, but a newly-released photo from the production seems to promise something very powerful and faithful to the source material. Check out the photo released of Shazam actor Zachary Levi literally glowing as the titular hero, below!

This is not your father's DC Comics superhero movie. Gone is the dark atmosphere, and in its place is something that's all smiles and childhood wonder -- with a literal glow of power on his chest to hammer that idea home. In the photo, we see a fully transformed Shazam (Zachary Levi) hanging out with Freddy Freeman (IT actor Jack Dylan Grazer) as they explore the possibilities of the powers that Billy Batson (Asher Angel) recently acquired from a mysterious wizard (Djimon Hounsou).

This is one of our best glimpses at the full Shazam costume, and the fact that the symbol on the chest lights up already singles it out as something very distinct from heroes like Ben Affleck's Batman or Henry Cavill's Superman. Moreover, many fans have been clamoring to see a finalized version of the Shazam suit following some arguably unimpressive behind-the-scenes photos leaked during the film's production. Now that we have a proper look, it is far easier to see what the director actually wants the outfit to look like in the final cut of the movie.

Of course, for fans of the DC Comics source material, there's one other element of this photo that seems to jump out: how similar it is to the New 52 origins of Shazam. For the sake of comparison, check out a panel from Shazam's New 52 run, below!

From the snow, to the way Billy and Freddy Freeman play around with Billy's newfound superpowers, it's clear that David F. Sandberg and the folks at DC have pulled quite a bit of material from that particular source. That said, with no official trailer yet, we will have to wait and see what else the film will adapt from the comics.

David F. Sandberg's Shazam! will hit theaters next year on April 5, 2019! Arthur Curry is the star of the show in Aquaman, but without Mera by his side, you get the sense from watching the movie's previews that the half-human, half-Atlantean superhero would have a much harder time accomplishing his mission. Amber Heard is bringing Mera to life in the DC Extended Universe, and as she recalled, it didn't take much to get her to join the franchise; just the promise that she would wield a sword and be royalty. Heard stated:

They had me at sword and a crown. Zack Snyder and I spoke on the phone and I didn't really think a comic book [film] would be something that would be appropriate for me. I didn't really... knowing nothing about the comic book world, knowing nothing about the universe, I didn't really have any reason to feel like that would resonate with my sensibilities or my core principals.

Although Mera is arguably the most important supporting character in Aquaman, the character has already been introduced in Justice League, which was helmed by Zack Snyder. As Amber Heard admitted when speaking with ET, she never thought she would star in a comic book movie, but when Snyder came to her with the opportunity to play Mera, a badass, water-dwelling warrior with royal blood, she was immediately ready to take the role.

Luckily for the actress, she grew even more enamored with Mera once she started delving into the Aquaman source material, as there was further proof that the character isn't a damsel in distress. This helped her with stepping outside of her comfort zone. Continuing in her interview with Entertainment Tonight, Heard revealed:

I remember the first scene I read in this comic and Mera and Aquaman... had just saved a town from some aquatic disaster, hurricane, or something of that effect, and as the townspeople or the civilians are picking up pieces of their life they look and they say, 'That's Aquaman!' and they look to Mera and they're like, 'Who are you? Is that Aquawoman?' And she stops what she's doing and she says, 'I'm not Aquawoman. I have my own name. My name is Mera.' and I was like, 'I can get behind that woman!'

Amber Heard added that her iteration of Mera and Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry have a "very special dynamic" that doesn't require Mera to be relegated to a "position of dependency or subservience." She's powerful, self-possessed and in control of her destiny, and when paired with Arthur, the dynamic is fair and balanced. If it wasn't that way, I suspect that Heard wouldn't have joined the DCEU. At least visually, Heard's Mera looked like she jumped straight from the printed page, and we won't have to wait much longer to get a full sense of her characterization.

Mara has been part of the Aquaman mythology since appearing in 1963's Aquaman #11. Like Arthur Curry and other Atlanteans, she can breathe underwater and super strength, but she is also gifted with hydrokinesis, i.e. being able to manipulate liquid, an ability that others from the penal colony of Xebel share.

In recent years, in addition to being an integral member of the Aquaman comic book, Mera has also led her own solo title and was briefly a member of the Justice League. Outside of the comics, Mera has appeared in TV shows like the Justice League animated series, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Young Justice, but needless to say that the Aquaman movie will introduce her to a lot of people who aren't at all familiar with DC lore.

We met Amber Heard's Mera in Justice League when Steppenwolf attacked Atlantis to obtain the Mother Box that the Atlanteans had been protecting ever since the Apokoliptan general first tried to conquer Earth thousands of years ago. Sadly, even with Arthur Curry's help, Mera and the other Atlantans were defeated and Steppenwolf made off with the Box. Afterwards, Mera tried to convince Arthur that he had the wrong idea about his mother, Atlanna, who Arthur felt had abandoned him.

Mera and Arthur will reunite in Aquaman when the former asks for the latter to finally accept his royal duties and take the Atlantean throne so that Arthur's half-brother Orm, known in the comics as Ocean Master, doesn't declare war on the surface. As the trailers have shown, that conflict is going to unfold regardless, but Arthur and Mera will be together for a lot of the ride, thus resulting in them growing closer.

Along with showcasing a lot of underwater action, Aquaman will see Arthur and Mera traveling to an ancient Atlantean temple in the Saraha and facing off against Black Manta and his goons in an Italian village. It's also worth noting that in the DCEU, Mera is the daughter of Xebel's ruler, Nereus, a drastic departure from the comics, where Mera was betrothed to Nereus before meeting Arthur.

From the footage shown so far, it doesn't look like Amber Heard is lacking for screen time in Aquaman, let alone action scenes. While it's far too soon to tell if Aquaman will get a sequel, assuming the DCEU does delve back into its aquatic realms, Heard is definitely excited about reprising Mera, and is particularly eager to team up with other heroines, like Wonder Woman.

Along with Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, Aquaman stars Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna and Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, among others. The Conjuring mastermind James Wan directed and the script was penned by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, based off a story by Geoff Johns, who wrote the Aquaman comic book at the start of the New 52 reboot.

There was fun to be had and there were genuine moments where I laughed out loud as Mike and Dave met their match with the two ladies. Devine and Plaza were good together especially during Tatiana's attempts to evade Mike's advances. The rest of the supporting cast were a mixed bag.
