Amazon Wants To Make Movies With Major Studios

Amazon has already made itself a major player in Hollywood thanks to the original movies it has created, but now it looks like the company wants to take things a step further. It's being reported that Amazon has had talks with major studios about having them produce films that would be released directly on the Prime Video service.

While nobody is officially talking, it appears that Amazon has already had meetings with both Sony and Paramount and Deadline reports it's possible that meetings with other studios have also taken place. The goal of these talks appears to be striking a deal with a major studio in order to get some potentially big existing studio productions released directly to Amazon Prime, similar to what Paramount did earlier this year when it released The Cloverfield Paradox, a previously scheduled theatrical release, directly to Netflix.

While it's far too early to tell if anything is going to come of these meetings, nobody is even admitting they're happening, it's clear that the media landscape is changing in a big way and the major film studios are trying to figure out how they will fit into it. Streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Video are now major players and with Disney getting ready to launch its own streaming service, everybody else is going to need to find a way to compete. Putting together a strong partnership with a company like Amazon might make more sense than trying to compete against them.

It also may be a good opportunity for studios to have another option for film releases. It was reported that part of the reason that The Cloverfield Paradox ended up on Netflix is that the studio wasn't confident in its theatrical chances. However, the film certainly found an audience on Netflix so it likely worked out for both parties.

Amazon has had no problem making successful movies on its own. Films like Manchester by the Sea and The Big Sick, which were Amazon Studios productions, received Academy Award nominations and the former film took home awards. However, Amazon probably isn't in a position to make movies on the scale of Sony and Paramount, so having something to compete with the likes of Paradox, or the upcoming Mowgli, will be a benefit for them.

While streaming services started as a place to find your favorite shows and movies, the focus now is on original content. The service that has the new stuff people want to watch is the one that people are going to subscribe to and if it also has movies that look like the sort of thing you'd have to go to the theater to see, so much the better.

Zac Efron For Nightwing? Here's What The Director Says

Of all the films on the current DC slate, one of the most exciting of the bunch is Chris McKay's Nightwing movie. The LEGO Batman Movie director will bring us our first live-action silver screen Dick Grayson since the Joel Schumacher years, and fans have wondered who will eventually step in for the titular role. One name that has been thrown around is none other than Baywatch star Zac Efron, but it looks like there's not much truth to those rumors. When asked by a fan whether or not Zac Efron had been confirmed as the latest incarnation of Dick Grayson, Chris McKay took to Twitter and wrote:

Those rumors of Zac Efron stepping in as Dick Grayson have been greatly exaggerated. Though he definitely has the physique, charisma, and on-screen presence to portray someone as badass as Nightwing, Chris McKay wants all of us to know that the Neighbors star has not been signed for the film just yet.

Of course, Chris McKay's tweet doesn't provide much information beyond his decision to refute the Zac Efron rumors. We still have no idea who is actually in the running to portray Nightwing in the DCEU, and casting rumors have run rampant as the movie has developed. For all we know, Zac Efron could technically be in the running for the role; he just hasn't been confirmed yet. At this point, we're just going to have to wait and see what happens.

Chris McKay has made no secret of the fact that he wants to perform an exhaustive search for Nightwing in his development of the young hero's movie. He has regularly kept fans updated on the status of the project in recent months, noting that everything needs to be perfect in order to "blow your mind." In layperson's terms: he's taking his time with the film, and he doesn't seem overly eager to announce any casting yet.

With all of that said, what we do know about Nightwing has us very excited about where the DCEU could go from here. Chris McKay has spoken passionately about the film since signing on as its director last year, and he has promised insane action and a deep dive into Dick Grayson's past. Given the amount of depth he was able to add to The LEGO Batman Movie, we feel inclined to believe that he could do the same with the grown-up Robin.

A Surprising Number Of People Still Subscribe To Netflix's DVD Service

Today, Netflix is all about movie and television streaming online. However, when the company first got started, its entire business model was based around renting DVDs to consumers. While you almost never hear anything about that side of the business now, it turns out that a lot of people still rent their DVDs from Netflix, to the tune of around 3 million subscribers to the service.

Those 3 million subscribers are a drop in the bucket compared to the 117 million subscribers that Netflix has around the world who subscribe to the streaming side of the business that provides both licensed and original content to view on demand. According to Variety, Netflix still makes good money off the DVD side though, over $50 million last quarter alone came from that side of the business. Still, people have been unsubscribing from that side of things at a steady rate, so, while the DVD rental business will likely still be around for a few years, it will close eventually.

If you rent DVDs at all, you probably do it through Netflix, mostly because there simply aren't a lot of other options. Before Netflix disrupted all of media by streaming content and creating its own original content, Netflix completely changed the DVD rental game by allowing you to rent movies by mail. It was the last nail in the coffin of traditional DVD rental stores that now barely exist in the world.

While it's a bit surprising that so many people still rent DVDs from Netflix, it certainly makes some sense. While Netflix, and other streaming services people have access to, have a massive amount of content available, they don't have everything and a lot more is available via DVD. While it doesn't give you the ability to watch whatever you want right now, if you get a particular desire to watch an old favorite that isn't available online, you can have it in a couple days. In addition, movies don't end up on Netflix until after they've been out on DVD for a while, so if you want to be able to watch a new movie sooner, you need to watch it on DVD.

Of course, while the DVD business may still be good, it really isn't where Netflix is spending its effort. It's all about creating original TV series and movies in order to boost the appeal of the Netflix streaming service in order to increase subscriber numbers.

At some point, the DVD rental service will close up shop and Netflix will say goodbye to the industry that helped it build the empire it has today, but for the moment it's still going fairly strong. Do you still rent DVDs from Netflix? Let us know in the poll below.
