Infinity War Creators Bet On Wakanda Before Knowing If Black Panther Would Be A Hit

Marvel Studios has had a very good summer, especially with the one-two punch release of Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. These superstar films came out just a mere two months apart, so those who loved Black Panther (which was pretty much everyone) didn't have to wait long to return to Wakanda. Featuring Wakanda as the location for the climactic third act in Infinity War was actually something of a gamble, however, because the creators had no guarantee Black Panther would be a hit, co-writer Stephen McFeely recently pointed out.

Listen, a year ahead of time, we had no idea 'Wakanda Forever' was going to be amazing. We tested this movie a few times, and when we got to this scene, most of the audiences, say in January and early February, went, 'Oh this is an interesting place, I've never been here before.' After mid-February, once Black Panther had come out, this scene gets a huge cheer. It just rewards you investing in these characters. I shouldn't have been surprised, but boy, I was really pleased.

Regardless of early unknowns, adding Wakanda to the superhero team-up movie was something that clearly worked out for everyone. Happily, it's something the creators are willing to talk about, as well. It wasn't that long ago that Avengers: Infinity War was in theaters, and the blockbuster movie is already available on Digital HD. Fans who purchase it or the upcoming Blu-ray have access to all kinds of special features, ranging from the standard gag reel to a roundtable discussion amongst a who's who of Marvel directors. One of the best features for behind-the-scenes trivia comes from the feature commentary with directors Joe and Anthony Russo and writers Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely. The creators of the movie dropped a lot of interesting information in the commentary, including the decision to set the third act in Wakanda before really knowing what was going on in Black Panther.

Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther were filming in Atlanta, Georgia at the same time, so no one making Infinity War really knew to expect from the solo movie or how people would react to it. Seeing as how a huge chunk of the movie takes place in Black Panther's world, that was a risk, but it made story sense to be in Wakanda. As co-director Joe Russo pointed out, Wakanda is really the only place on Earth that could have protected Vision and the Mind Stone.

It was a big conversation early on. I said, 'We're going to set a lot of the third act in Wakanda, because if you're going to go anywhere in the world to protect a McGuffin from an evil alien, it's going to be Wakanda.'

Obviously, everything worked out pretty well, and McFeely even ventured to go on and call the early decision a "slam dunk." Both movies went on to be mega hits and one has to wonder how many Black Panther fans ended up seeing Infinity War just to see those characters again.

This time around, fans have a little while to wait before seeing Wakanda or the Avengers again. The next Marvel movie is Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019, and that film will be followed by Avengers 4 on May 3, 2019.

Looks Like Avengers 4 Might Be Giving Iron Man A Cool, New Weapon

Even before he donned his numerous Iron Man suits, Tony Stark was a master at creating weapons, though that was solely for turning a profit at Stark Industries. Nowadays any weapon Tony comes up with is for benevolent purposes, although as we saw with Ultron, sometimes these plans can go horribly wrong. Regardless, Tony is still tinkering around, and a new Avengers 4 set photo has revealed he might be breaking out a new weapon that has a ridiculous amount of firepower.

You can head to the geekpowerbackup Instagram page to look at this Avengers 4 set photo, but this device basically looks like a giant cannon that resembles the Proton Cannon that Iron Man would break out in the Marvel vs. Capcom video game. Granted, this particular contraption isn't nearly as massive as the Proton Cannon and can't be brought out nearly as easily, but it definitely looks like it could a powerful punch.

For those of you wondering if this weapon is legit, we've actually already seen it. During Avengers: Infinity War, when James Rhodes is chatting with Thunderbolt Ross in Tony Stark's workshop at the Avengers' headquarters, the weapon is in the background, as you'll see below on the far left side.

Naturally given everything that was happening in that scene, most viewers probably didn't pay any to this device. After all, as mentioned earlier, Tony Stark likes building things, so what does it matter of there's a particularly big contraption sitting in the corner? However, the weapon popped up again last month in that cryptic "Look hard" photo directors Joe and Anthony Russo posted last month.

Now keep in mind that even though this device exists, we don't know for a fact that it's a weapon. It's possible it could be some kind of engine or reactor that powers something else that Tony Stark will bring out during Avengers 4. Either way, with something this large, one would imagine it will have some importance to the plot rather than constructed to be a Easter egg. Then again, maybe the Russos are big fans of Marvel vs. Capcom and decided to pay tribute to the video game.

Since Marvel Studios still hasn't released any story details about Avengers 4, we have no idea what's in store for Iron Man and the other surviving heroes. Still, with Thanos out there and half of the universe snapped out of existence, one couldn't blame Tony Stark for enhancing this device to use against the Mad Titan. Let's also not forget that Avengers 4 might be introducing an "even greater threat" than Thanos, so perhaps this device is intended for that individual/mysterious force. Fortunately, we're only seven months way from having all of our Avengers 4 questions answered, so hang in there, fans!

Before Avengers 4 concludes Phase 4 with a bang, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will wind the clock back to the 1990s with Captain Marvel. Much like in the comics, Carol Danvers' origin story will be closely connected to the Kree, and over the last few months, we've heard rumors and reports about some of the alien players who will be participating in this prequel adventure. However, today brings official word that Captain Marvel will also include two characters who met their demise during 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy: Ronan the Accuser and Korath the Pursuer.

With Captain Marvel having finally kicked off principal photography, Marvel has officially announced the movie's main cast, and surprisingly, Lee Pace and Djimon Honsou are listed as reprising Ronan the Accuser and Korath the Pursuer, respectively. Both characters debuted in Guardians of the Galaxy, with Ronan serving as the main antagonist and Korath serving alongside Nebula as one of the side baddies. Korath was killed by Drax the Destroyer during Guardians of the Galaxy's climactic conflict, while Ronan perished soon after when the Guardians redirected the energy of the Orb (a.k.a. the Power Infinity Stone) back at the Kree fanatic.

Like her comic book counterpart, Carol Danvers is expected to gain her special abilities through an accident involving a Kree experiment in Captain Marvel. Carol's first chapter as a superhero will see her not only crossing paths with Kree like Mar-Vell, but also battling the shapeshifting Skrulls. It's hard to tell how exactly Ronan and Korath will fit into Captain Marvel, but since this movie takes place two decades before the events of Guardians of the Galaxy, it will be interesting to see how these two characters are different compared to their older selves. Disgusted by how the Kree Empire signed a peace treaty with Xandar, Ronan attempted to wipe out the Xandarians during Guardians of the Galaxy, so I wonder if he was just as radical during the 1990s or if his demeanor was a little softer back then. Given that the Kree have been at war with the Skrulls for centuries in the MCU, I'm guessing that Ronan was intensely militaristic, but the events of Captain Marvel will push him over the edge.

Ronan the Accuser and Korath won't be the only familiar faces showing up in Captain Marvel alongside Brie Larson's Carol Danvers. Last summer, it was announced that Samuel L. Jackson will return as Nick Fury, who at this point in time still has two working eyes. Today's announcement also revealed that Clark Gregg will reprise Phil Coulson, making this his first Marvel movies appearance since 2012's The Avengers, although he's still been actively participating in the MCU through ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The rest of Captain Marvel's main cast includes Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temtev and McKenna Grace.
