What's Going On With The Train In Solo: A Star Wars Story

While the inhabitants of the Star Wars universe primarily rely on spacecraft and speeders for getting around, there are some transportation options available in a galaxy far, far away that are the same as what we have on good ol' Earth, trains being one of them. Just a few days ago, we saw a particularly large train in the Solo: A Star Wars Story Super Bowl TV spot gliding across magnetic rails in a snowy, mountainous environment. It was one of the preview's many blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments, but it turns out that this train will play an important part in Solo: A Star Wars Story, as the young Han Solo will have to steal something from it.

Solo: A Star Wars Story has been described numerous times as a "heist film," and one of the thefts in the movie, if not the main one, will take place aboard this roller coaster-like train, which is called The Conveyex. While it hasn't been revealed yet what exactly Han will have to take from The Conveyex, the reason he's taking part in this heist is so he can prove he has the right stuff to make it in the seedy underworld. Just working off this brief look at this Solo moment, it's clear that this is not going to be an easy job. Because even if Han, Chewbacca and whoever else is helping them out manage to get into the train as it's moving over that landscape, you can bet that once inside, they'll have to deal with a lot of security protecting the valuable cargo. However, if Han pulls off this heist successfully, then he'll be surely impress a lot of his fellow criminals, including Woody Harrleson's character, Tobias Beckett.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy also talked a little bit about how Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story differs from the one we meet in the Mos Eisley Cantina during A New Hope, saying to EW:

He might be a little more immature, he may be a little less experienced, and he may hone his cynicism over time, but he's very wary. He needs to gain the respect of the people he interacts with, even if they're the lowest of the low.

Even though Harrison Ford's Han Solo is no longer with us, as he was killed by his son during The Force Awakens, Solo: A Star Wars Story will turn back the clock and shed a lot of light on the smuggler's pre-Rebellion life, like how he met Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian. While learning these details may help Star Wars fans appreciate Han Solo even more, this movie still needs to deliver on action, and this train heist sounds like it will provide quite a bit of thrilling entertainment.

Netflix Is Still Having Trouble Getting Awards Contenders Into Theaters

Since masterful director Alfonso Cuarn teamed up with Netflix for his deeply personal and experimental film Roma, it has marked something of a shift for the streaming giant. As an Oscar contender and a film that simply should be seen on the big screen, Netflix has been having conversations with theaters across the country to give Roma this chance. The most prominent U.S. indie chain, Alamo Drafthouse, has declined to show the Oscar hopeful for Netflix due to the company's inflexible "restrictions and guidelines."

Netflix and Alamo Drafthouse have been in negotiations for weeks to show Roma in the chain's Brooklyn, New York location in 70mm. The streaming service was hoping to rent out the theater's largest auditorium for four weeks without splitting box office profits with them during a busy holiday season for movie releases. According to Business Insider, Alamo Drafthouse and some other arthouses have turned down this deal because of Netflix's strict conditions, and it doesn't help that Roma can be streamed just a few weeks after its theatrical release

Netflix has been turning to indie theaters chains because major ones expect a 90-day exclusivity window. The company won't agree to this, but has compromised on a one to three-week theatrical exclusivity. Roma will instead play New York at Manhattan's IFC Center and in other select theaters in cities across the U.S. Two other Netflix films will be available in theaters for just one week before they hit the streaming site, the Coen Brothers' The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Bird Box starring Sandra Bullock. Netflix wants to put these films in theaters to give them a shot at awards recognition and garner the attention of more Hollywood royalty to collaborate with.

Following the streaming service's massive success with original television series such as Orange is the New Black, The Crown and Black Mirror, Netflix has started to venture into making more of its own exclusive films for subscribers. Release such as Like Father, To All the Boys I've Loved Before and Set It Up fall under impressive made-for-TV content. But enlisting an Oscar-winning director such as Alfonso Cuarn with an artistic vision to create something truly unconventional and touching shows a shift in ambition for Netflix.

Netflix will soon find some competition with Disney's upcoming streaming service Disney+ in 2019. This will have all of the company's attractive titles from the studio, such as Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok, disappearing from Netflix. Amazon Studios is also constantly adding more original content to Amazon Prime, recently producing some Oscar nominees including The Big Sick and Manchester by the Sea. Hulu is also rising through the ranks with a show like Handmaid's Tale receiving acclaim, it's only a matter of time before it creates original films of its own.

Netflix has always been an innovator in streaming, so its attempted dealings with theaters will likely continue until the company finds a way to make high-profile filmmakers, theaters and itself collaborate successfully. Roma will be in select theaters on November 21 before finding its way on Netflix on December 14.
